Sea Scout Centennial - 2012

We are proud to announce the kickoff for the Sea Scout Centennial 2012 Countdown, a nationwide recruiting drive. Our theme is "What Did You Do This Weekend?" Our challenge to all Sea Scouts is to increase our membership from 7,000 to 10,000 members. This will require every Sea Scout Ship recruiting six new Sea Scouts between now and December 31, 2012. This can also be accomplished by organizing new Ships to serve areas where there are currently no Sea Scouts being served.

For ideas and resources to assist in recruiting new youth or organizing new ships, go to the link: http://www.seascout.org/joinus/. The Sea Scout Centennial Recruiting Week Program Announcement located on the link will share additional recruiting tips to support your efforts.

September 20th to 25th is the first Sea Scout Fall Recruiting Week, culminating on Sea Scout Recruiting Day on September 25th. Sea Scouts from across the country should be asking others "What Did You Do This Weekend?" and inviting them to check out Sea Scouts. This campaign can be conducted at any time that fits a local area, not just in September.

Sea Scout Recruiting Day is a time to showcase the best of your program. If you include FUN activities and food, you will succeed. Invite youth to go sailing; row a whaleboat; make a Monkey's Fist Key Chain; or practice the Boatswain's Chair. Provide a lunch, such as barbequing burgers. The agenda is only limited by your imagination.

Have everyone ask their friends, "What Did You Do This Weekend?" and they will see how much fun Sea Scouts can be.

TPWD Training

Boater Education Courses in the Houston Area

It has now become a requirement for the rank of Ordinary to attain the TPWD Boater License. This is not a difficult task if you like online courses or a self paced booklet - But what if you want to be part of a group because you feed on the input from others.  Well we have a solution for you as well.

If you are interested in becoming a Boater Education Instructor please let your skipper know about your interest so that it can be shared at the fleet meeting. We would love to train an instructor in every ship in the fleet.

Seabadge SB-1-TX-2010

November 19-21, 2010
Camp Strake Conference Center, Conroe,TX
Sponsored by: Sam Houston Area Council

PURPOSE

To provide Sea Scout adult leaders with an opportunity to learn and improve leadership, managerial, and motivational skills and to develop peer relationships necessary to build and improve successful Sea Scout programs in their areas of influence.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Seabadge is intense leadership and management training focused on the “how-to” aspects of successful Sea Scout program management. Seabadge does not cover topics like boating, knots, or other program-related materials found in the Sea Scout Manual. If you are interested in the “how to manage youth who run the boat course” you must attend Seabadge Underway.

Course participants and staff function as a model ship to help participants understand how a ship should function. The curriculum includes twenty-three sessions, with established objectives, that are presented in a motivating and informative forum.

SEABADGE PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS

Seabadge is an advanced leadership training program designed for experienced Sea Scout adult leaders. Candidates must meet the following minimum standard requirements prior to consideration for participation in a Seabadge course:

1.   Must be currently registered as a Sea Scout adult leader or BSA professional or commissioner staff working with Sea Scout ships.

2.   If a Sea Scout adult leader, must be actively involved in the Sea Scout program at least one continuous year prior to application.

3.   Complete Youth Protection Training and Sea Scout Adult Leader Basic Training (or its equivalent).

4.   Obtain Scout executive (or designee) approval from their council.
